what religion was brought to the new world?

who brought it?
  • The spanish
    • the spanish, after the inquisition wanted to expand their empire and diffuse catholicism. after the discovery of the new world by christopher columbus the predilection spain had, not only for gold, but for religion became a reality. the spanish didn't only conquer the inca and aztec, they enslaves their people and forced them into catholicism.
  • Hernando Cortez
    • Cortez is the notorious conquistador from spain who discovered the Aztec civilization and defeated them in battle, enslaved them, gave them small pox killing off over 2/3 of the population, and enslaving the remaining population and converting them.
  • Fransisco Pizarro
    • similar to cortez, Pizarro was another blood thirsty, ambitious conquistador from Spain. he conquered the Incan empire in south america, which occupied the modern day countries of Peru, Ecuador, Chile, Columbia and Argentina.
how was it diffused?
  • Once the Spanish conquistadors began their conquest of the new world they brought an ray of new ideas, technologies, and even disease. the most important of these ideas they brought over to the indigenous pagan people of the americas was religion.
  • The spanish diffused religion by establishing churches for worship, and sending over clergy from spain in order to convert the indigenous pagan people.

why this religion?
  • Catholicism was the mandatory religion of Spain at the time of the conquering. The monarchs of Spain, Ferdinand and Isabella, launched the inquisition just before, in order to make Spain a unified catholic empire. In order to accomplish the task of making Spain completely catholic, Ferdinand and Isabella launched the inquisition which eliminated all jews and muslims from spain, this also included other pagan beliefs.


where was catholicism spread?
  • california was a well established catholic land established by spain. using viceroyalty they made pueblos with churches in them, they would do so after they enslaved and converted the native indians.
